What’s the Pump?
Now before you anti-weight room hipsters start rolling your eyes and jumping to conclusions, just hear me out.
The Pump isn’t something most people understand and it gets a bad wrap for it. But I tell you what, it’s what keeps me coming back to the gym day after day. I’m a person who handles stress terribly and chasing the Pump relaxes me. It’s what gives me confidence to have all 34DD worth of side boob hanging out when I lift. It’s what gives me energy to finish my workout. Quick reality check for some of y’all, working out fucking sucks most days. Nobody leaves the comfort of their homes with a smile on their face to go workout. (Exaggerating to get my point across)
Y’all know me, I’m like Marshall Mathers when it comes to using the dictionary. I went ahead and looked up the definition of the pump and this is what google (Urban dictionary) had to say about it, “A slang term commonly used amongst Bodybuilders to refer to the feeling in which blood is ‘pumped’ into the muscle for support during overload causing it to expand in size and becoming tight blah blah blah bullshit”
Let me break it down for you because it’s so simple. The Pump happens to everyone alright? Not just body builders or people who lift heavy weights. But to anybody whose out there being active.
For me, there’s a clear sign of when I’m in the Pump. Call it a “Pumping station” if you want to. It’s a quick moment, very easy to overlook. It usually happens after I get done with cardio and start doing my warm up sets. For those who don’t properly stalk me, I do cardio and shoulder exercises to warm-up at the beginning of every workout. Mainly because my shoulders are literally my pride and joy of my body. (Don’t act like y’all don’t obsess or a specific body part) I usually start hating myself half way into cardio, then I gotta get my 3 sets of shoulders done. Usually on my second or last set I start cussing at myself. It goes a little something like this.
“5…6… uh mother fucker…… 7…… come on! 8,,,,” Mind you, I’m squinting the whole time, really struggling to finish the set. Ok continue,” (Exhales obnoxiously)…..I wanna go home….. 9…..10″ (Drops the weight like a gorilla. Just no regard for other people in the weight room)
Then I finally open my eyes all the way, catching my own gaze off the reflection of the mirror.
“Damn, Look at you James.”
For those of you that were having trouble painting a picture off of my colorful commentary, here’s what happened. I had just finished my 2nd set of my warmup. After I dropped my weights I took a real quick glance at myself in the mirror. I was covered in sweat, literally drenched. Looked like a sweaty raisin. Very unappealing to my weight room patrons. But what really caught my eye was that my whole body was puffed up a little. Muscles were looking defined, stomach didn’t hang over my waist. But what made me really excited was that my good old friend Jeffery had came out for a lift. Not a real person, but a vein. Right in my shoulder going down my bicep.
(Get your heads out the gutter)
For a guy that isn’t exactly proud of his body. To look into the mirror and actually feel happiness, joy, euphoria? That’s what makes going to the weight room worth it.
Now don’t start looking at me like I’m some type of psychopath, because everyone does it. I don’t care who you are. Caught one of my good friends checking out her ass between sets. Guys would literally forget they’re not the only person in the weight room and pop their shirt off and ask someone, “Can you take a back pic for me?” These things happen. And you can’t even knock people for it because it’s what keeps them committed to their own personal program. Looking in the mirror and seeing results, even if it’s for a couple minuets.
What I’m getting at here is if you struggle with your body image the “Pump” could get you right. If you’ve had a shitty day, the “Pump” can take your mind off that. If you’re boyfriend cheated on you throw a brick through his window and use the “Pump” as your alibi.
That’s it for this blog post, Sorry that it’s been a while since I posted. Also if you guys haven’t notice I post about random shit. Whatever comes to my mind that day and feel like sharing I’ll write about. But don’t hesitate to drop a suggestion about what you want to hear. And another thing I swear alot, that’s just how I talk. This is my blog and people read it to hear my voice behind these words, if you don’t like it. Read something else.
