This is going to be a 3 part series where I incorporate the Looking Glass Self Theory into a chance encounter between two individuals. This is something that I felt was worth writing about because it gives a better understanding of how people view one another. But more importantly how you view yourself.
The 9-5 and get Live, Man
You get done with a long day at work. It’s been one of those weeks where a minute felt like an hour, an hour felt like a day, and Friday felt like a journey away. The only thing that was getting you through the week, was the thought of kicking your feet up, and relaxing with a cold brew.
It’s kind of like how you wake up early on Monday mornings. You open your eyes, already wishing for it to be the weekend. You summon the energy to get ready and head to work. You get there and you see your co-workers and you think to yourself, “These fucking guys.” With pure hate written all over your face.
But it’s crazy, you find yourself enjoying their company as the week goes on. Makes work a little bit more tolerable. Makes time go by a little bit faster. You catch yourself thinking, “These fucking guys.” But with a smirk on your face this time.
Before you know it, work isn’t as bad as you made it out it out to be. This realization breezes over your body like a breath of fresh air. A breeze that you want to carry you throughout the week. But, instead it carries you to Wednesday.
So, you’re coming off this high of being back at work with your somewhat tolerable coworkers. The breath of fresh air turns slowly into a smoldering cloud of fatigue.
Finally, it’s the end of the work day on Friday and it’s officially the weekend. You bolt out of your job trying your hardest not to have any lingering conversations with the peasants you work with.
You slam the door shut and you quickly put on your good vibe song at max volume.
Everybody is guilty of doing this. Don’t know how but rapping/singing your favorite song at the top of your lunges in your car, is relaxing.
Without even thinking about it you floor it to your favorite bar.
You don’t even bother stopping at home to change out of your work clothes. Fuck it, loosen up that tie, unbutton a few notches on your shirt. The hipster look is in anyways. Your not out to impress anybody.
You get to there and you plop down in a seat. With beer in hand and phone on silent, you take in the moment. Try to savor every last second, every last drop.
All the built-up stress that comes from working 40+hours a week fades into the bottom of that glass. You’ve been looking forward to this all week. This makes the long days almostworth it.
As you’re enjoying your moment you feel someone staring at you. Glancing to your right you see a girl, not just any girl. A girl with a smile that can brighten up the room.
Your eyes lock and she smiles. Your heart skips a beat…
But something is off, she’s wearing a mask that covers her face from the nose up. The only thing that you can see is her ocean blue eyes and heart stopping smile.
Now imagine this, treat the mask as a two-way mirror. You can see her just fine, but not the real her.T
The her that would make you look up to the skies and have a conversation with God. Literally thanking him for dragging you through this week. Making you dread having to wake up the next morning just to crawl through the day. Only to meet this bright and shiny light at the end of the tunnel.
But you don’t know that yet. You don’t know that side of Her. You only see the ocean blue eyes and heart stopping smile.
The only thing separating you from these special characteristics of hers is the mirror.
Now I ask you this, what is your perception of her? Can you tell just by this encounter.
Part ll coming soon, stay woke y’all
